On August 21, 1904 on a farm near Sutherland, in Grant Township, O’Brien County, Iowa, Hulda Marie (Jebsen) Olhausen was born to George and Weibke (Scherner) Jebsen. She spent her early childhood going to country school and working on the farm She later worked at Red's Café and also with Dr. Hand. When mothers had their babies at home, she would stay and help the family for a few days. On October 22, 1934, she married Harry Olhausen. To this union five children were born. Harry and Hulda spent most of their married life in Hartley. After Harry retired as Postmaster in 1971, they moved to Las Cruces, NM. Harry passed away on July 18, 1972. Hulda was loved by everyone, and was always there for you. She was a stay-at-home mom, and a beautiful seamstress who made most of her children’s clothes. She had the best vegetable garden, and canned everything. What she was most famous for, though, was her homemade bread and rolls. Every Saturday, the neighbors would come for coffee and fresh rolls, hot from the oven. Hulda had been a member of the Trinity Evangelical and Reformed Church in Hartley, and was a long-time member of the Eastern Star. She passed away at her home in Las Cruces, NM on February 29, 2008 at the age of 103. Left to cherish her memory is one son H.
