Memorial Tribute George Arvel Balliet, son of William Berlyn and Irene Blanche (Smith) Balliet, was born on January 9, 1918 in Wecota, SD. At an early age, the family moved to Faulkton, SD where George grew up, and graduated from high school. He then continued his education, and graduated from Hanson Auto School in Fargo, ND. After visiting his sister in Sanborn, IA, he decided to stay in the area and received employment at Getting Trucking. George entered the armed forces on April 7, 1941. He was in the Anti Air Craft Division, and was stationed in the Aleution Islands off Alaska for 27 months. He then served at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX for a total of 44 months in faithful service to his country. On March 29, 1945 he married Lyla Mae Wieman at Ft. Bliss, TX. The couple resided in the Sanborn area for awhile, but eventually settled in the Hartley area for the majority of their married life. After his retirement from trucking in 1979, George enjoyed volunteer work and gardening. He was a member of the Hartley United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post #288 of Hartley. Left to cherish his memory is his wife Lyla, one son Gary and his wife Ronna Balliet of Sergeant Bluff, IA, and one daughter Karen and her husband Rod Keller of Hartley, IA; five grandchildren: Aaron, Brett and Christopher Balliet, and Trisha (Jeremy) Pearson, Ashley Uthe (Isaiah Daggett) and Nicole Keller (Michael Shire) and three great-grandchildren, Kaley, Zachary and Natalie;one sister Della Mae Caslavka; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, two brothers, and one grandson, Jonathan George Uthe.
