Please share a memory of Lavonne to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lavonne Maxine (Dummett) Porth, the daughter of William "Glenn" and Gladys (Vrooman) Dummett, was born on February 14, 1922 in Sanborn, IA. She grew up in Sanborn and graduated from Sanborn Public High School. On April 2, 1941, she was united in marriage to Raymond Porth in Sioux City, IA. Their life-long friends, Dick and Rosie Sanders, joined them for the wedding and honeymoon. Following the marriage, Ray and Lavonne farmed in the Sanborn area, and then moved into Sanborn in 1955. Along with farming, they operated the Wal-Ray TV and Appliance business. After retiring from farming in 1972, they traveled in their 5th wheel camper and enjoyed their winter home in Florida. In the early years of their marriage, Ray and Lavonne enjoyed playing in the clown band from Sheldon led by Zip Hudson. They would travel around the area and play in parades. Eventually other family members (Ray's sister Jean and her husband K.C., and Denny, Peggy, Christy and Ron) would play in the summer band in the park band shell at Sanborn. Through the years, Lavonne enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, and playing bridge. Most recently, she liked watching golf and poker on TV. She especially loved watching the goldfinches and spending time with her family. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Bridge Club. Survivors include her children and their families: Dennis Porth and Angela Dill of Tunica, MS, Christine (Porth) and Glenn Van Meeteren of Sanborn, IA, and Ronald and Carol (Elgersma) Porth of Heron Lake, MN; 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; one sister Lillian Wilson of Clearwater, FL; one sister-in-law Jean (Porth) Horacek of Littleton, CO; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Raymond, one daughter Peggy (Strenge) Bjorn, infant sons Dean and Dana, two grandsons Dana Strenge and Brian Van Meeteren, three great-grandchildren: Tyler Ray Porth, Tucker and Zoe Herfkenz, a son-in-law Glen Strenge, and two brothers Virgil and Richard.
