Obituary of Nelly Koehnecke

Nelly (Elgersma) Koehnecke, the daughter of Harry and Tena (Dood) Elgersma, was born on July 14, 1916 in Sanborn, IA. She spent her childhood years living in the O’Brien county area, and attended country school. On September 21, 1941, Nelly was united in marriage to Erwin (E.P.) Koehnecke at Sheldon, IA. Following their marriage, the couple lived in the Sanborn and Spencer areas before moving to Hartley in 1951. They spent the remainder of their lives living in Hartley. Nelly and E.P. dearly loved their local community. Over the years, Nelly worked at both the Hartley Creamery and the Hartley Hotel. Her greatest pride, however, was in taking good care of her family and her home. She loved to bake, and was famous for her brownies and rice krispie bars. She enjoyed spending time looking at photos and talking to family on the phone. She was an avid reader. Nelly was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hartley. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Roger Koehnecke and his wife Dianne of Wildwood, MO, and Rita Wohlert and her husband Robert of Iowa Falls, IA; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; her brother, Ervin Elgersma and his wife Virginia, of California; her sister-in-law Alvina Elgersma of Hartley; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister and brother-in-law Henrietta and Russell Benz, and brother Clarence Elgersma.
