Obituary of Darold Rost

Please share a memory of Darold to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Darold "Mick" Rost was born in Hartley, IA on November 1, 1930; the son of John and Molly (Gonnerman) Rost. He spent his childhood years at Hartley, attending and graduating from Hartley High School. He also attended Iowa Lakes Community College. On June 6, 1954 he married Arlys Wiese, and the couple was blessed with three sons: Arlen, Darwin and Dan. Mick farmed for many years, and drove a gas truck. Much of his life was centered on children. Besides raising their own family, he and Arlys hosted many foster children, exchange students, ran a youth center, and the concession stand at the ball field. After his retirement, he kept busy as a handyman and a gardener. Mick was a member of Trinity UCC, and was proud to have been a Marine, a Boy Scout Leader, and a Commander of the American Legion. Christmas time was especially fun, as he would dress up and play Santa. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, and was an animal lover. Some of his many hobbies included playing cards, writing poetry, taking photographs, making cross jewelry, playing bingo, and entertaining at the nursing home. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Arlys; his sons and their families: Arlen and Kathi of Spencer, IA, Darwin and Lauren of Las Vegas, NV, and Dan and Molly of Sioux Falls, SD; 11 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; 10 foster children; one sister, Velma Holtz; many other relatives and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers: Ronald and Morris, a brother-in-law Melvin Holtz, and a nephew Gayle Holtz.
