Obituary of Darrel Hennings

Memorial Tribute Darrel "Pork" Duane Hennings, the son of Emil and Ethel (Franker) Hennings, was born February 17, 1930 in Moneta, Iowa. He spent his youth in the Moneta area where he received his education, graduating from Moneta High School with the class of 1948. On October 18, 1950, Darrel enlisted in the United States Navy and served on the USS Pickaway during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged on July 28, 1954. He was united in marriage to Mildred "Millie" May Tewes on September 6, 1969 at Sanborn, Iowa. They were blessed with one daughter, Jill. Together they farmed near Hartley, Iowa until Millie's passing on January 7, 2009. On January 29, 2011, Darrel married Colleen Agnes Hilbert at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hartley. Darrel moved into Hartley where he and Colleen enjoyed eating out and traveling together. He passed away at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer, Iowa on August 28, 2013, at the age of 83. Darrel was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hartley. He was an owner/operator of H&T Shelling & Trucking Co., served on the Hartley Hospital Board, O'Brien County Pork Producers, and was a founding board member of the Hartley Community Center which he also managed. Darrel served as Legion Commander of the Hartley Legion Post #288 for several years, was named Hartley's "Citizen of the Year", and in 1993, became the first recipient of Hartley Lions Club's "Melvin Jones Award". He enjoyed fishing, gambling, puzzle books and spending time with his grandson. Survivors include his wife, Colleen; daughter, Jill (Roger) Vander Veen; one grandson, John Vander Veen all of Hartley; step-children: Katheleen (Jerry) Otto, Mary (Shelley) Westphalen, Tim (Launa) Hilbert, Terry (Melody) Hilbert, Gina Moravec, Geri (Rob) Jacobs, Jennifer (Greg) Boll; 22 step-grandchildren; 13 step-great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Millie; two sisters: Delores and Carmen Hennings. Celebration of Life Darrel D.
