Obituary of Alice Scott

Please share a memory of Alice to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Vera Alice (Helsel) Scott, the daughter of Harry and Orpha (Leonard) Helsel was born on May 15, 1932, in Pratt, KS. She lived out her childhood in the Pratt area along with brothers, Marvin and Richard, and sister, Marjorie. At a young age, Alice became the first female to deliver the newspaper in Pratt. Later, she worked at the theater where she met the love of her life. Alice was united in marriage to Billie E. Scott, Sr. on March 25, 1949 at his parents’ home in Pratt, KS. To this union, four children were born; Judy, Billie, Shirley and Monty. Due to Billie’s painting business, the family lived in Kansas and Iowa to allow for the seasonal change. In 1964, they moved to Gillette Grove, IA, and in 1966, they moved to their current home outside of Everly, IA. Alice loved cooking for her family, an ability which led her to be a cook in the Everly-Moneta School system. She also worked in housekeeping at The Hotel in Spencer, IA and spent 17 years with the Spencer Municipal Hospital. In 1981, she received her High School diploma. While her family was young, Alice became a Girl Scout leader and assisted with the local 4-H club. Her cooking talents found her baking pies for the Curtis Café and at the Clay County Fair booth. Her retirement years were spent enjoying stamp collecting, crafts and gardening. She particularly loved doing genealogy research, hosting and attending family reunions – especially the Christmas gathering every November at Ft. Dodge. Alice always kept her hands busy with quilting, crocheting and making blankets for her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she adored. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Richard Helsel. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Billie; her children: Judy (Ralph) Brausey of Spencer, IA, Billie (Linda) Scott of Livermore, IA, Shirley (Eric) Dolphin of Hartley, IA, and Monty Scott of Webster City, IA; one brother: Marvin (Judy) Helsel and one sister: Marjorie (Allen) Long; 10 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
