Wilbur Walter Smith the son of Walter William and Midred Leona (Gross) Smith was born on December 24, 1921 in Sanborn, IA. He grew up in the Sanborn, IA area and graduated from Sanborn Public High School in 1940. After high school Wilbur enlisted in the United States Navy on July 2, 1942 and served in both European and Pacific Theaters. He received five battle stars. He was honorably discharged on November 1945. He was united in marriage to Mae Anne Everitt on August 5, 1944 in Philadelphia, PA. To this union four children were born Russell, Dale, Paula and Patricia. Following their marriage the couple lived in Sanborn, IA where Wilbur served as the Postal Clerk until retiring in 1976. On August 5, 1980 Wilbur was united in marriage to Ruby Johanna Huber Hatterman at Paullina, IA. Wilbur passed away on March 4, 2012 at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley, IA at the age of 90. Wilbur was a member of the St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church of Sanborn, IA, the Earl T. Conaway Legion Post #318 of Sanborn, IA. He loved to fish and travel. He is survived by his four children: Russell Wayne Smith of Hartley, IA, Dale Ray Smith of Phoenix, AZ, Paula Rae (Roger) Burley of Hartley, IA, Patricia Anne (Tim) Roberts of Hartley, IA; his second wife: Ruby Johanna Smith of Primghar, IA; 10 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; two nieces and one nephew; other relatives and friends. Wilbur was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Mae Anne, brother Ron, son Paul, and sister Mernice.
