Peder Erling Buck, the son of John and Helene (Svensen) Buck, was born in Yankton, SD, on April 1, 1927, He lived his youth at Center Point, SD, which is near Viborg, SD. He attended country school Sletten Dist #1, near their farm and then graduated from Viborg High School in 1944. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy and was stationed in Guam. After finishing his duty with the United States Navy, he furthered his education by studying to be a teacher at Grand View Jr. College in Des Moines, IA. He taught for one year at Viborg, SD, with a temporary teaching certificate. He received his bachelor’s degree at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Wanda Rowena Graham on December 29, 1951 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Viborg, SD. Following their marriage the couple moved to Miles, IA where he taught for four years, and then moved to Clarksville, IA and taught for five years. While he lived there, he was able to obtain his Master’s Degree through Saturday classes at IA State Teachers College. During these nine years they were blessed with two sons and a daughter. In 1960 they moved to Hartley where he had the privilege of serving the Hartley Elementary School as their principal for 29 years. Peder passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, IA at the age of 84. Peder was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ, the Trinity Brotherhood, president of the consistory and other various church committees. He was a long time member of the Hartley Lion’s Club, Kiwanis and the American Legion. He had a passion for fishing and the art of tying flies. He enjoyed golfing, baking bread, gardening, camping, reading, and an annual trip to Tyler, MN for the Danish Folk School. Peder loved to entertain and serve Danish cuisine to family and friends. A good cup of coffee, cookie and visiting with family and friends were enjoyable to Peder. Peder is survived by his wife of 60 years, Wanda; his children: Bruce (Deb) Buck of Raleigh, NC, John Buck of Marion, IA, and Joellen (Ed) Harders of Hartley, IA, an exchange student, Ellinor (Kjeld) Hellmuth of Copenhagen, Denmark; six grandchildren plus two Danish grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters Marion at the age of four and Marie at infancy. Celebrating the life of Peder E.
