Obituary of Dean Meyer

Dean Ernest Meyer, the son of Ernest H. and Gertrude (Anderson) Meyer, was born March 20, 1929 in Forest City, Iowa. He was baptized on June 30, 1929 in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, IA. At the age of two Dean went to live with his paternal grandparents, Henry and Emilie Meyer. Dean attended elementary and high school in Whittemore, IA, graduating May 15, 1946. Following his school years Dean worked at various jobs and then worked on the H.R. Pettit farm. At that time they built the Plantation Ball Room and Dean helped Hitchy design and build it. On September 4, 1949, Dean married Harriet Schmeling in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Whittemore, IA. He was confirmed there on March 15, 1951. They lived in several communities, including Whittemore, IA, Lake Crystal, MN, Ralston, NE, Paullina, IA, and finally Hartley, IA. Dean worked for E.A. Pedersen Co. of Omaha, NE building and installing switchboards in power plants throughout the Midwest. He was a power lineman and light plant operator in Lake Crystal, MN. Dean held the position of Superintendent of Utilities in Paullina, IA for two and half years and was superintendent of public works in Hartley, IA until he retired in 1992. He was instrumental in making many improvements for the cities of Paullina and Hartley. Dean passed away on Tuesday, March 06, 2012 at the Baum-Harmon Mercy Hospital in Primghar, IA at the age of 82. While in Paullina he served on the fire department, was president of Zion Lutheran School Board and president of the P.T.A. He also served on the boards of MBMECA, IAMU, Midwest Electric Consumers and was secretary-treasurer for Vector for many years. Dean had a talent for refinishing furniture, and enjoyed visiting and helping neighbors. He is survived by his six children and their spouses: Lynn (Annette) of Nixa, MO, Pamela (Ronald) Claussen of Lakewood, CO, Clark Meyer of Amsterdam, NY, Renee of Highlands Ranch, CO, Denise (Michael) Krohn of Littleton, CO and Scott Meyer of Strawberry Point, IA; 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; one brother: Gerald; two sisters: Dian and Mildred; several nieces and nephews. Dean was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Harriet, one brother, Lee, one sister, Mavis, a brother-in-law Wilferd and a sisters-in-law, Elaine and Judy.
