Donald Eugene "Don" Uittenbogaard Obituary
Donald Eugene Uittenbogaard, was a lifelong farmer and devoted steward of the land. Born near Sanborn, IA, on March 24, 1943, Don attended a country school through the 8th grade level and learned early the value of hard work and community. He took over the family farm during his youth due to his father’s declining health, carrying forward a legacy of dedication to the land.
On June 17, 1966, Don was united in marriage to Bertha Vander Top, beginning a partnership that would endure a lifetime. Together, they raised three children: Lisa, Mark, and Leah, who were the pride and joy of Don’s life.
A man of deep faith, Don was a lifelong member of the Sanborn Christian Reformed Church, serving in various capacities including Sunday school teacher, deacon, and elder. He and Bertha shared a passion for serving others through ministry, particularly with CRWRC Recovery Work teams. Don took great joy in this work, using his hands for building and construction projects to help communities in need, reflecting his commitment to service and generosity.
Don’s love of farming extended beyond the fields. In later years, he enjoyed bowling, restoring tractors, and sharing antique tractor rides with family and friends. His enthusiasm for the simpler things in life - working the land, tending to machinery, and being in the company of loved ones - touched all who knew him. Don peacefully passed away on May 18, 2026, under the tender care of the staff at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD.
Don is survived by his children: Lisa (Doug) Dekkenga of Spirit Lake, IA, Mark (Sheila) Uittenbogaard of Sanborn, IA and their children: Jesse (Leah), Jacob (Erin), and Micah (Madelyn), and Leah (David) Bethoney and their children: Dylan, Elliot (Taylor), Claire, and Meredith (Noah). He also leaves behind his siblings: Ted (Carolyn) Uittenbogaard of Mesa, AZ, Marsha (Bob) Anema, and Rhonda (Don) Brower all of Sanborn, IA; as well as his beloved great-grandchildren: Ava, Levi, Ila, Bryson, Sadie, and two more expected; many nieces, nephews, and extended family members will also cherish his memory.
Preceding him in death were his beloved wife, Bertha; his parents, Ed and Agnes Uittenbogaard; his sister, Kay Stellinga; and his parents-in-law, Dick and Florence Vander Top.
Don will be remembered for his hard work, his devotion to family, his faith, and his joy in serving others. He leaves behind a legacy of service, kindness, and a life well-lived.
