Matthew Paul “Matt” Helmers, the son of Joan (Walker) Helmers and Paul Helmers was born on April 2, 1972, in Sheldon, Iowa. He grew up on his parents’ farm near Melvin, Iowa and graduated from Sibley-Ocheyedan high school in 1990. 

    In 1994, Matt was united in marriage to Shanelle Krause and together they had two children: Todd Matthew and Trista Ann. They raised their children near Melvin, Iowa and later divorced in 2005. Matt continued to live on the acreage and in 2009, met his life partner, Shelly Mortenson. Together they resided on the acreage and spent loads of time planting flowers, grilling, and just being with family. 

    Since 2004, Matt has held his longtime position at Worthington Ag Parts in Worthington, Minnesota. He rose through the ranks with his infectious sense of humor and deep knowledge of agricultural equipment, having filled the roles of Assistant Manager, Manager, and Salvage Buyer during the past eight years. 

    Matt loved his family and friends deeply and everyone knew he would always be in their corner. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, grilling, and spending time with those he cared about most. He loved being a grandpa. Matt had a profound way of causing “trouble” and you always knew there would be laughter when you were around him. He was a true outdoorsman as well as a proud member of Ducks Unlimited - Chapter 31. 

    On Saturday, April 4, 2026, Matt passed from this life at the age of 54 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Joan Helmers. 

    Left to cherish his memory are his partner, Shelly Mortenson of Melvin, Iowa; three children: Todd Helmers, Trista (Austin) Kavanagh all of Sheldon, Iowa and Trever Mortenson of Spencer, Iowa; one granddaughter, Collins Ann Kavanagh of Sheldon, Iowa; one brother, Tim (Jessica) Helmers of Sheldon, Iowa and their daughters: Emma and Ellie Helmers; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives, and friends.
