Bonnie Jean Kreykes Obituary

Bonnie Jean Kreykes, the oldest of three children of Marvin and Dorothy (Hofman) Bosma, was born August 30, 1942 in Sheldon, IA. She received her early education at a country school south of Sheldon, completing the 8th grade at Sanborn Christian School. After graduating from Western Christian High School in Hull, IA, she taught lower grades for three years at the Christian School in Bigelow, MN.

On June 20, 1963, Bonnie was united in marriage to Gary Kreykes at the Christian Reformed Church in Sanborn, IA. Together they started farming and raising their four children, retiring in 2013. Bonnie had worn many hats besides being a wife and mother. She had worked at Hastings Photography Studio in Sheldon and helped Gary on the farm with livestock and fieldwork (which is what she enjoyed the most). She was a member of Cornerstone United Reformed Church in Sanborn, she taught Sunday School, and participated in the Crossroads Prison Ministries.

Bonnie enjoyed being a foster mother, taking care of 20-plus babies. During that time, Lisa Joy, their special-needs daughter, was adopted. When Lisa passed away, Bonnie no longer had the desire to be a foster mom so she began working for P&K Pest Control and became known as the “Bug Lady”. For many years, Bonnie and Gary also had the privilege of hosting Dordt College students for Sunday dinner following the morning church service. Being observant by nature, Bonnie often noticed students who were rather quiet and would offer to help them work through any problems they were facing. With their own children living in Washington, Alaska, and North Carolina, Bonnie and Gary did a lot of traveling and also spent many enjoyable winters in Florida.

On May 1, 2022, Bonnie suffered a stroke and in January of 2023, moved to Prarire View Nursing Home in Sanborn, passing away there on Tuesday, October 21, 2025 at the age of 83.

She will be deeply missed by her husband of more than 60 years, Gary, of Sanborn, IA; two daughters and one son: Rhonda (Leroy) Plagerman of Lynden, WA, Jeffrey Kreykes of Durham, NC and Connie (Scott) Plagerman of Delta Junction, AK; 15 grandchildren: Michael (Rachel) Plagerman, Lucas (Melinda) Plagerman, Leighton (Amy) Plagerman, AJ (Heather) Plagerman, Jana (Mason) De Haan, Amber (Sam) Drake, Kyle Plagerman, Danny (Kenna) Plagerman, Layne Plagerman, Jessica (Chase) Green, Cole Plagerman, Cody Plagerman, Jewel (Aric) Vander Haak, Abby Plagerman, Levi Plagerman; 19 great-grandchildren; one brother, Dennis (Cindy) Bosma; one sister, Patricia (Jon) Sybesma; brother-in-law, John R. (Betty) Kreykes; sister-in-law, Alyda Roetman; and many neices and nephews.

Bonnie was preceeded in death by her daughter, Lisa Joy; her parents, Marvin and Dorothy Bosma; parents-in-law, JohnW. and Gertrude Kreykes; and brother-in-law, Bernard Roetman.
