Gregory Lee "Greg" Heyn Obituary

Gregory Lee “Greg” Heyn was born on August 7, 1948, at Bartron Hospital in Watertown, South Dakota, the son of Leo “Bob” Heyn and Eleanor (Reichling) Heyn.

He grew up on a farm between Castlewood and Kranzburg, South Dakota and attended the Catholic school in Kranzburg through the eighth grade. He then continued his education at Castlewood High School where he excelled as an athlete. Greg maintained a lifelong love for sports, with a particular passion for golf and bowling. He achieved multiple perfect 300 games in bowling and was especially proud of his high score of 810, which he often said was even harder to accomplish. In recognition of his success, he was inducted into the South Dakota Bowling Hall of Fame in 2023.

In 1968, Greg was united in marriage to Linda Carlson; from this union two sons were born: Robbie and Terry.

Greg eventually settled in Sanborn, Iowa, while working with a crew installing grain bins in the area. During that time, he built many lasting friendships and decided to make Sanborn his home; Robbie and Terry would later join him. After living in Sanborn for a while, Greg began working for BSI in Hartley, Iowa. On June 30, 1990, he married Linda Carol Ward. They spent the first years of their marriage in Sanborn where Greg was employed with AMPI; a job he enjoyed until his retirement. Later, they went south for the winter to Apache Junction, Arizona, making many cherished memories together.

Greg passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early morning hours of October 13, 2025, at his home in Sanborn.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Linda of Sanborn; sons: Robbie (Patty) Heyn of Le Mars, Iowa, and Terry Heyn of Sanborn; grandsons: Adam Heyn of Chicago, Illinois and Samuel Heyn of Sanborn; stepchildren: Todd (Julie) Brage of Fitchburg, Wisconsin and Terry (Karen) Brage of Gold Canyon, Arizona; sister, Julie Kretzschmar of Watertown, South Dakota; and sister-in-law, Lorna Heyn of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo “Bob” and Eleanor Heyn, his brother, Mark Heyn; sister-in-law, Tammie Dehn; brothers-in-law: Frank Kretzschmar and Calvin Engles; and mother and father-in-law, Robert “Bob” and Delores “Peanne” (Reihe) Ward.
