Obituary of Wilbert "Bill" Ivan Postma
Please share a memory of Wilbert "Bill" to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Bill Postma was born October 20, 1956, to Howard and Jamie (Heath) Postma. He was given the name Wilbert Ivan in honor of his grandfathers, Wilbert Postma and Ivan Heath. Bill grew up north of Sanborn, IA on the Postma family farm and received his education in Sanborn. While in school, Bill was a percussionist and a member of the cross-country track team which would be crowned state champions in 1974. He graduated from Sanborn High School with the class of 1975.
Following high school, Bill attended Ryder Tech in Des Moines, IA, graduating with high honors after completing their diesel mechanics program. He began his career as a mechanic at Halsne International in Spencer, IA while farming with his father and uncle, Robert Postma.
In the early 1980s, Bill met his future wife, Phyllis Wulfsen, originally from George, IA, through a Bible study group in Worthington, MN. Their relationship blossomed during ski trips to Colorado and fellowship with friends, leading to their marriage on September 14, 1985. The couple settled on a farm near Melvin, IA and eventually purchased the family homestead north of Sanborn where they raised their children: Robyn and Ryan.
A skilled and dedicated mechanic, specializing in International machinery, Bill brought his talents to Juber Implement and then Mastbergen Repair, both located in Melvin. Throughout his career, he continued farming and this past spring, despite health challenges, he proudly helped Ryan prepare ground for his 49th crop - passing down both knowledge and legacy.
Bill’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. A devoted member of First Reformed Church, he served as a deacon, elder, and youth group sponsor along with Phyllis. He introduced many youth to the joy of downhill skiing. His quiet but unwavering faith spoke louder than words.
After a successful liver transplant in the fall of 2023, Bill and Phyllis moved into the town of Sanborn, cherishing time spent with their children and grandchildren. Bill’s final challenge came in the form of cancer; a five-month battle he faced with courage and quiet strength. On June 27, 2025, with his beloved wife and children by his side and still in his own home, Bill entered the presence of his Savior.
Bill is survived by his wife of 39 years, Phyllis; daughter, Robyn and Brent McDowell and son, Ryan and Leah Postma; four grandchildren: Evan, Braden and Sophie McDowell and Lydia Postma; his sister, Cindy and Mark Van Beek; brother, Mike and Nickey Postma; Phyllis’ sister, Ruth and Brian Schroeder; and brother, Chuck and Natalie Wulfsen; nieces, nephews and cousins; as well as his cherished cocker spaniel, Libby.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Jamie Postma; and his in-laws, Art and Rose Ann Wulfsen.
