Gene Francis White was born November 2, 1941, to Emerson F. and Viola M. (Fitzer) White in Hartley, Iowa. He received his education in Hartley, graduating from Hartley High School in 1960. While in school, Gene had participated in football and basketball, which, in later years,  earned him a place in Hartley’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

    On December 3, 1960, Gene was united in marriage to Betty Schmidt. To this union four children were born: Jeff, Nancy, Sherry and Michael. The family moved to Everly, Iowa in 1974 where Gene was employed with Harms Implement. He worked there for 20 years as a machinery welder and trusted employee.

    Eventually, Gene moved back to Hartley and completed his real passion in life – operating and managing his family farm; that was where he really thrived. When farming duties would allow, he enjoyed league bowling in Hartley through the winter months and golfing out at Meadowbrook when it got warmer. Many good times were had, and lasting friendships were made while walking the greens on the golf course.  

    In 1994, Gene married Marlene Joyce Horstman. They both worked hard and played hard; enjoying dancing and socializing with friends at the local establishments. You were always welcome at their farm and would most likely be invited to stay for a visit and a cold beverage.

    Gene was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease 15 years ago; it has been a long, sad road. He passed from this life on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley at the age of 83 years.

    Preceding him in death were his parents, Emerson and Viola White; his son Jeff White; his wife, Marlene; and his brother, Wayne White.

    Left to cherish his memory are his children: Nancy (Dave) Miller, Sherry (Chuck) Stockwell and Michael (Cheryl) White; stepchildren: Peggy Sterler and Jess Horstman; many beloved grandchildren; his brother, Arlyn (Patti) White; and other relatives and friends.
