Denny was a dedicated and active member of Arthur W. Kirchhoff Post #288, American Legion, going on 56 years. He was very patriotic - for many years before health became an issue, he always wanted to carry the US Flag at parades and at the high school Veterans Day programs. Even last fall, when his health was failing, he wanted to carry the US Flag at the Homecoming Parade, which unfortunately, he wasn't able to do.
For the past 15 years he served as our Post Chaplin. One of the primary responsibilities of that position is to present the flag to the next of kin during "Honors" at funerals of deceased veterans. Conservatively, he probably performed that act over 75 times - and always with great dignity and professionalism - knowing how important it was to the families. He knew every detail by heart and even his uniform would be immaculate. He would display the same standards every Memorial Day, while reading names of those in the "Avenue of Flags" and then at the end reciting the names of those to be dedicated that particular year.
He was "proud" to be a loyal and committed Legionnaire. Thursday, it will be my honor to present Denny's flag to Denise.
