Obituary of Zenna DeBoom

Please share a memory of Zenna to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Zenna Katherine (Meylink) De Boom, the daughter of William and Kate (Sawyer) Meylink was born on May 21, 1914 in Carmel, IA. She started school in Primghar, before her family moved to Sanborn. She graduated from Sanborn High School, and was proud to have been Valedictorian of her class. From an early age, Zenna enjoyed teaching. In her teens, she taught Sunday school at both the Methodist and the First Reformed Church in Sanborn. She later taught in country schools near Sutherland. On Oct. 24, 1935 she was united in marriage to William De Boom in Sanborn. Zenna’s greatest joy came from spending time with William and their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She especially enjoyed summers when they worked and played together. She was known for her many handmade quilts which she shared with her family. She loved working in her garden and flowers when she was able. She canned or froze hundreds of pints and quarts of her homegrown foods. She was even canning pickles and applesauce in the years after her 90th birthday. There will never again be such delicious pickles! She enjoyed playing 500 and Bridge, and was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. Through the years Zenna had been an active member of the Women’s Association of both the Sanborn Reformed Church and the American Reformed Church in Primghar. She served as Women’s County Chairman of the O’Brien Co. Farm Bureau, and was active in the Primghar Women’s Club. Left to cherish her memory is her husband, William, two daughters, Darlene (Garry) Sampson of Primghar, and Delores (Brad) Douma of Sanborn; one son, Bill (Sherri) of Orange City; nine grandchildren: Katie, Barb, Terry, Yvonne, Deanna, Amy, Debi, Tim and Betsie; 14 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren; a brother Milo Meylink of Long Beach, CA; sisters-in-law Elaine and Jeanette Meylink, both of CA; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter Alice Kae, and a son David Paul; one grandchild, one great-grandchild; two brothers, Donald and George. In Remembrance of Zenna K.
