Obituary of Leona Gruenewald

Memorial Tribute Leona “Onie” (Miller-Kruger) Gruenewald, the daughter of Guy and Bertha (Leider) Miller was born on April 15, 1917 in Ocheyedan, IA. She spent her childhood years in the Sanborn, IA area, where she attended the local schools, and graduated from Sanborn Public High School. In 1940, she married Herbert Kruger. They lived their married life and raised their children in Sanborn. Herbert passed away in December of 1971. She married Robert Gruenewald on October 22, 1983 in Sanborn. The couple stayed very active—going to dances, golfing, walking and giving their time to the church. Following Bob’s death on July 4, 2003, Onie made her home at the Kuiper Villa, and then at the Prairie View Nursing Home, in Sanborn, where she passed away on March 12, 2007. She was a long-time member of St. John’s Lutheran Church at Sanborn. A wonderful cook, Onie was famous for her cinnamon rolls and coffee cakes. She loved spending time with her great-grandchildren—always giving them lots of hugs and kisses. She enjoyed gardening and bird watching. Survivors include her twins: Mary Long and her husband, John of Cedar Rapids, IA, and David Kruger and his wife, Trish of Lake Bluff, IL; one step-daughter, Deborah Tebo and her husband, Ron of Beaverville, IL; five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, two step-great grandchildren; one brother, Roger Miller of Auburn, GA; one sister, Carla Beckman of Sanborn, IA; other relatives and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husbands, and one son, Richard.
