Karleen Betty (Hargrave) Ferguson, the daughter of Thomas and Laura (Sorensen) Hargrave was born on February 15, 1932 in Dickens, IA. She spent her childhood years in Dickens, and graduated from Gillette Grove High School. On January 17, 1953 she was united in marriage to William Ferguson at Jackson, MN. Following their marriage, the couple made their home on a farm near Gillette Grove, IA, and then moved to a farm south of Dickens, IA. In 1970 they began farming west of Hartley, IA, which is where they raised their family. Bill and Karleen moved into the town of Hartley in 1982. She was a member of the Hartley United Methodist Church and its UMW Circle, as well as the American Legion Auxiliary Post #288 of Hartley. Karleen is described, by her family, as everything that a wife and mother should be. She was completely devoted to her family, and they were the top priority in her life. She was a compassionate woman who took great pride, as well as great joy in caring for others. She had worked as a certified nurse’s aide at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley. In her spare time she enjoyed crocheting, and was an excellent cook. Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 54 years, William; her children and their families: Sherry (Wayne) Souer of Wapello, IA, Stan (Sherrie) Ferguson of Charter Oak, IA, Bob (Sheila) Ferguson of Spring Lake, NC, and daughter-in-law Janet Ferguson; 12 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; one brother, Bill Hargrave and his wife, Arlene; two sisters-in-law: Arlene (Mrs. Fred) Hargrave, and Ruth Zelinsky; nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons: William Michael Ferguson and Ben Thomas Ferguson; one brother, Fred (Bud) Hargrave; William’s parents, Earl and Charlotte Ferguson; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Joan and Harry Hansen; and a brother-in-law, Wilbur Zelinsky.
