Obituary of Alice Brockshus

Memorial Tribute Alice (Newquist) Brockshus, the daughter of Alfred and Mary (Mienking) Newquist, was born on October 2, 1923 at the Hand Hospital in Hartley, IA. She received her early education from a rural country school and went on to graduate from Excelsior High School near Lake Park, IA. Alice served as a Cadet Nurse during WW II, receiving her R.N. degree from the Lutheran School of Nursing in Sioux City, IA. Her post-graduate education was at the Margaret Hauge Maternity Hospital in Jersey City, NJ. After graduate work, she was employed at the Sibley Community Hospital in Sibley, IA. She furthered her nursing skills at N.W. College in Sheldon, IA after her boys were all in school. On February 18, 1951, Alice was united in marriage to Marvin Brockshus at St. John’s Lutheran Church in May City, IA. To this union three sons were born: Robert, Allen and Larry. The couple was engaged in farming west of May City for 34 years. Alice and Marvin enjoyed traveling together, and visiting their son, Larry, at his different Air Force assignments. Upon retirement, the couple moved into the town of May City where Alice spent her time reading or baking, and was always ready to lend a hand if someone should need her help. She was a life-long member of St. John's Lutheran Church in May City, teaching Sunday School, holding different offices of the L.W.M.L., and serving on many committees. She also thoroughly enjoyed attending the Bible Classes held there. Following Marvin's death on November 6, 2009, Alice continued living in May City until moving to Community Memorial Assisted Living in Hartley. On December 31, 2014, Alice became a resident of Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn, IA where she passed away on November 29, 2015 at the age of 92. Alice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marvin; son, Robert; and two sisters: Inez and Doris. She is survived by two sons: Allen Brockshus, his wife, Penny and step-grandson, Austin Folsom of Milford, IA, and Larry Brockshus and his wife, Nancy of Dakota Dunes, SD; grandchildren: Beth Foster, her husband, Darrick and their son, Miles of Bellevue, NE, and Adam Brockshus and his wife, Kristin and their children: Lauren and Nathan of Alexandria, VA; brother-in-law, Herbert Brockshus, and his wife, Marlene of Ocheyedan, IA; sister-in-law, Erna Kooistra of Sheldon, IA; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
